Program key fob remotes

Button

COMMUNITY-SOURCED · MK4 · LOCKS & WINDOWS

Teaches the car up to 4 remotes for locking and unlocking. This does not program the immobilizer.

Applies to
VW Golf / GTI / Jetta Mk4 (1J/9M), US 2000-2005.

Not confirmed for
1999.5 model year cars, New Beetle, Passat, Audi

Module
46 Central Convenience (power-window cars) or 35 Central Locking (manual-window cars). Ross-Tech label files: Comfort Gen 2 1J0-959-799, Gen 3 1C0-959-799; Central Locking Gen 2 1C0-962-258-II, Gen 3 1C0-962-258-III. vag-coding.net's screenshot filename shows a 6Q0-959-433-E module (a different part number).

Method
Adaptation

Requires
Working remotes for the car. Up to 4 total.

1 · Before you start

Run a full Auto-Scan and save it. In 46 Central Convenience (power-window cars) or 35 Central Locking (manual-window cars), write down or screenshot the current value of every setting before you change it.

2 · VCDS

  1. Have all the remotes you want to use ready (up to 4 in total, including ones already working).

  2. Open 46 Cent. Conv. (or 35 Cent. Locking on manual-window cars) > Adaptation - 10 > channel 01 'Remote Control Adaptation' > Read. The stored value is the number of remotes already learned.

  3. Enter the total number of remotes you want, click Test, check the test value, then Save and confirm.

  4. Within 15 seconds, press and hold UNLOCK on each remote for at least 1 second, one after another. The car may flash or beep for each one.

  5. If it fails, or Test/Save are greyed out (all 4 slots full), clear all remotes with channel 00 'Remote Control Clearing' (save 0), then repeat with every remote.

What this changes

Channel 00 deletes ALL learned remotes, so every remote must then be re-learned in the same session. Channel 01 itself only adds remotes up to the total entered.

Notes

vag-coding.net warns this does not program the immobilizer. Ross-Tech's 46 and 35 pages give the same channel layout for Gen 2 and Gen 3.
