Daytime running lights (headlights)

Button

COMMUNITY-SOURCED · MK5 · LIGHTING

Turns on daytime running lights, using the headlights only (North America mode) or all exterior lights (Scandinavia mode).

Applies to
VW Golf Mk5 (1K: Golf, Rabbit, GTI, R32), 2006-2009 US / 2004-2009 elsewhere.

Not confirmed for
Jetta Mk5 (option names match, but the byte positions aren't confirmed), 2010 Jetta, Golf Plus, Audi A3 8P

Module
09 Central Electronics. Ross-Tech lists several 1K BCM long-coding variants: 17/21/23-byte Highline and Midline, 17/21-byte Basis, and 30-byte Highline and Midline. Byte positions may differ between them.

Method
Long coding

1 · Before you start

Run a full Auto-Scan and save it. Copy the whole long coding string of 09 Central Electronics and keep it somewhere safe.

2 · VCDS

  1. Write down the current 09 long coding.

  2. Open 09 Cent. Elect. > Coding - 07 > Long Coding Helper (vag-coding.net selects sub-system '0', the BCM itself).

  3. Headlights-only DRL: tick 'Daytime Running Lights (North America)'. vag-coding.net (Golf 5) puts it at Byte 0 Bit 4.

  4. All-exterior-lights DRL: tick 'Daytime Running Lights (Scandinavia) active'.

  5. Pick one mode only, then save.

What this changes

Changes the car's existing DRL mode. On a car that already has DRLs (for example Canadian cars), ticking or unticking these options changes which lights run in daytime. No source says what happens if both modes are ticked.

Notes

The Canada note is unsourced; remove it or find a source. Ross-Tech says DRL behaviour depends on the market coding.
